Assistant Counsellor

The Organisation:

Pacific Adventist University (PAU) is owned and operated by the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The institution is accredited to the Adventist Accreditation Association, an international denominational authority for all tertiary and graduate educational programs and institutions owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church entities. The main campus is located on the pristine Koiari Park, 14 miles outside Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. The institution was established in 1984. Since then, it has grown from a college of 20 students, to a university of over 1000 students from across the Pacific.

The Role:

The Assistant Counsellor is responsible to the Director of Counselling Services in assisting to provide a range of Counselling Services and Programs to all staff, students and the university community at large.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of specific programs, interventions and actions to meet the counselling needs of staff, students (indoor and married) and the PAU community at large.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Counselling Services, work closely with residence deans (indoor and married), university church pastors, student village leaders, parents, registrars’ office and academic deans tocollect useful information/data to make informed decisions in relation to services in the area of counselling.
  • Keep updated and informed on various related issues and trends of concern, especially among the youth within the communities, church and the nation as a whole, and to assist in the dissemination of such information to appropriate audiences accordingly.
  • Assist the Director of Counselling Services in Departmental Planning and operation, in consultation with the Director of Student Services.
  • Assist in ensuring that there is effective guidelines and context for all Counselling programs in the University and contribute to positioning counselling as a recognized ministry concerned with supporting mental/emotional health and wellbeing.
  • Advise the Discipline Committee on Social Problems & Issues of the University
  • Assist the Director of Counselling in contributing to the accountability of the Departments expenditure within the allotted budget.
  • Maintain positive professional relationships and a personal lifestyle in harmony with the values and principles enunciated of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and in the statement of ethics and relationships at PAU.
  • Participate actively in the spiritual, cultural and recreational life of the campus.
  • Contribute positively to the spiritual wellbeing of the university, in support of creating a campus atmosphere that is congenial to Christian growth, and encouraging students, by example and word to make personal commitments to Christ.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required from the Director of Counselling.

About you:

Qualifications and Skills required:

  • A Diploma/Degree in Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or other related field of study.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in providing Counselling Services or clinical experience in a related work area.
  • A sound working knowledge of, and proven loyalty to, the church, its organization and policies.
  • Have an interest in and aptitude for cross-cultural ministry
  • A high level of person perception skills and cross cultural awareness.
  • Highly sensitized
  • A strong ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • An ability to be adaptive, innovative and contribute to more effective counselling approaches and methodologies.
