The Organisation:

Pacific Adventist University (PAU) is owned and operated by the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The institution is accredited to the Adventist Accreditation Association, an international denominational authority for all tertiary and graduate educational programs and institutions owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church entities. The main campus is located on the pristine Koiari Park, 14 miles outside Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. The institution was established in 1984. Since then, it has grown from a college of 20 students to a university of over 1000 students from across the Pacific.

The Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Repair & Maintenance, the incumbent will be responsible for performing all manner of carpentry works on PAU Campus including construction, renovation, installations, repairs and general maintenance tasks.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Installs, repairs and maintains interior building components related to the carpentry trade such as but not limited to construction and maintenance of walls, flooring, ceilings, windows, plastering, tiling, painting (if required), minor plumbing works, doors, etc.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains exterior building components such as but not limited to windows, doors, stairs, decks, roofing, guttering, walls, insect screen installation, etc.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on University buildings
  • Detect needed repairs on buildings by following established inspection procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and assist with inventory control of materials and equipment.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Liaise with respective supervisor and residents to complete projects.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Other duties could include working in other areas of the maintenance department to provide support during absences or shortage of staff in other trades or to perform duties associated with construction projects as requested by the Support Services Manager.
  • Requires flexibility and understanding that all carpentry and maintenance staff may be required to perform duties outside their normal working hours.

About you:

Qualifications and Skills required:

  • Possess a Certificate or Diploma in Carpentry from a registered training organisation.
  • Trade certification will be viewed very favourably.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years work experience.
  • Have an interest in and aptitude for cross-cultural ministry.
  • Applied knowledge of carpentry, joinery, building and construction.
  • Proven ability to draw, read, interpret and construct blueprints and designs.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisation and time management skills.
  • Be able to provide both verbal and written reports
  • Must be able to both work with minimal supervision and also to work as part of a larger team effort.
  • Must have a very good understanding of Occupational Health & Safety.
