Summary:
The Genset Maintenance Technician is responsible for the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and servicing of diesel- and gas-powered generators across company facilities. This role ensures a reliable backup power supply, compliance with safety standards, and optimal performance of all generator sets (gensets).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Generator Maintenance & Servicing
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (oil changes, filter replacements, coolant checks, battery testing).
- Conduct load bank testing to verify generator performance under load.
- Inspect and maintain fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and electrical components.
2. Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Diagnose and repair mechanical failures (engine issues, fuel injectors, turbochargers, belts, pumps).
- Troubleshoot electrical faults (AVR, control panels, wiring, circuit breakers, voltage regulators).
- Replace defective parts and ensure proper reassembly and testing.
3. Emergency Response
- Provide 24/7 on-call support for generator failures and power outages.
- Rapidly diagnose issues and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
4. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain detailed service logs, work orders, and maintenance records (CMMS or manual logs).
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 110, EPA emissions standards, and company safety policies.
- Track fuel consumption, runtime hours, and spare parts inventory.
5. Installation & Commissioning Support
- Assist in new generator installations, ATS setups, and synchronization checks.
- Verify proper operation before handover to operations.
Job Requirements:
1. Education & Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Technical certification in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Generator Maintenance, or a related field (preferred).
- Manufacturer certifications (Cummins, Kohler, Caterpillar, Generac) are a plus.
2. Experience
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in generator maintenance and repair.
- Familiarity with diesel/gas generators (10 kVA – 2000 kVA+).
- Knowledge of ATS, load banks, and paralleling systems.
3. Technical Skills
- Mechanical: Engine diagnostics (compression tests, fuel system troubleshooting). Ability to disassemble, repair, and reassemble generator components.
- Electrical: Proficiency with multimeters, meggers, and diagnostic tools. Understanding of control panels, wiring diagrams, and synchronization systems.
4. Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Good communication skills for reporting and team coordination.
5. Work Requirements
- Field work involving on-site servicing at multiple locations.
- Physical demands include lifting up to 25 kg, working in confined spaces, and performing outdoor repairs.
- Shift work with rotational on-call duty for emergencies.
