About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Purpose

We are currently looking for a Supervisor, Core Shed who will play a key role in supporting near-mine and brownfield exploration programs by leading a team of technicians and managing day-to-day logistics. This role helps keep exploration activities running smoothly so geologists can focus on their core work. A big part of the job is training and mentoring the team to build their skills and independence, ensuring high-quality support across all field activities.

We strongly encourage applications from Papua New Guinean nationals and expatriates. If you're proactive, detail-focused, and bring strong interpersonal skills—especially in building relationships, resolving conflicts, and supporting training—this could be a great opportunity for you to grow and make a meaningful impact.

Essential Duties

Team Supervision

Serve as the main contact for the technician team, fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders elsewhere at the operation to support exploration activities.

Core Shed Management

Oversee the core and pulp shed, ensuring they're well-maintained, fully stocked, and support all geological activities to the highest standards.

Remote Field Activities

Work closely with the Supervisor Exploration Geologist to lead the planning and delivery of logistical support for remote field exploration activities.

Liaison with Stakeholders

Serve as the main contact for the technician team, fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders elsewhere at the operation to support exploration activities.

Safety Performance

Ensure all technician team activities follow Newmont’s Always Safe protocols, while actively promoting safety through pre-shift meetings, field interactions, and mentoring on key safety initiatives.

Training & Experience

We’re looking for someone with strong industry experience, preferably with prior expatriate exposure. You should have good planning skills and proven leadership abilities, with the confidence to manage teams and work well with others. A positive attitude toward continuous improvement and experience supervising contractors are important. Basic financial and budgeting knowledge, along with experience in business planning and strong computer skills (especially Microsoft Office), will help you succeed.

You’ll need a current forklift licence, and licences for backhoes, excavators, or telehandlers would be a plus. Being able to get a PNG driver’s licence for cars and trucks is also required.

Working Conditions

For this opportunity, Lihir is offering a 21:21 FIFO roster from a range of designated marshalling points.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Sport and Social Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).

Newmont employees are rewarded with a competitive salary package, options for salary packaging and annual incentive program.

At Newmont, our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that everyone can work to their full potential, free from discrimination, while respecting the cultures, religions, and governance of the regions in which we operate. Guided by our values of Safety, Integrity, Sustainability, Responsibility, and Inclusion, our Lihir team – 90% of which are Papua New Guinean – is dedicated to creating a culturally rich and supportive environment where meaningful, long-term connections can be formed within the industry.

We believe in the strength of our people and the positive impact we can create together. Newmont employees are rewarded with a competitive salary, flexible packaging options, and programs that recognize those who go above and beyond. We know no candidate meets every qualification listed, so if you share our values and feel you can make a meaningful contribution, we encourage you to apply before the closing date: 01 July 2025 – we’d love to hear from you!
