Position Purpose
The Team Leader – Finishing Carpenter is responsible for overseeing and managing the finishing carpentry team to ensure high-quality installations of woodwork, cabinetry, trim, and decorative elements. This role involves supervising daily activities, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards, and coordinating with other site teams to meet project timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead and manage the finishing carpentry team, ensuring tasks are assigned efficiently.
Provide training and mentorship to carpenters to maintain high craftsmanship standards.
Monitor performance and ensure team members follow project specifications and deadlines.
Supervise the installation of doors, windows, frames, moldings, baseboards, and decorative woodwork.
Oversee the assembly and fitting of cabinets, shelves, panels, and built-in wood structures.
Ensure precise cutting, shaping, and installation of wood materials to meet project requirements.
Inspect work to ensure accuracy, smooth finishing, and proper alignment.
Guide the team in sanding, staining, varnishing, and painting wooden surfaces.
Ensure the proper application of laminates, veneers, and protective coatings.
Check final finishes for uniformity and quality before handover.
Enforce the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to site safety protocols.
Conduct regular safety briefings and toolbox talks with the team.
Ensure compliance with all workplace health and safety regulations.
Communicate with the site supervisor, construction manager, and other trades to ensure seamless workflow.
Prepare and submit progress reports on completed work, challenges, and material usage.
Report material shortages, damages, or required replacements to management.
Inspect completed work for defects and arrange for necessary corrections.
Resolve technical issues related to finishing carpentry installations.
Implement process improvements to enhance work efficiency and quality.
Job Requirements
Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
Certification or trade qualification in Carpentry / Joinery / Woodworking (preferred).
Additional leadership or supervisory training is an advantage.
Minimum 5 years of experience in finishing carpentry, including trim work, cabinetry, and decorative woodwork.
Minimum 2 years of experience in a supervisory or team leader role.
Experience with high-end finishing and precision carpentry is a plus.
Ability to lead, train, and motivate a team.
Strong knowledge of woodworking materials, tools, and techniques.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
Experience in surface finishing techniques, including staining, varnishing, and painting.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
Ensure all team members follow safe handling procedures for tools and equipment.
Enforce proper lifting techniques and safety measures for working at heights.
Maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment.
