About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose

Reporting to the Superintendent – Electrical & Instrumentation, the Technical Advisor – Electrical plays a critical role in supporting the long-term maintenance strategy of the Asset Management Electrical team. The position is responsible for ensuring the reliability of electrical systems and minimising operational disruptions during outages. This includes providing expert technical support during plant shutdowns and contributing to the continuous improvement of maintenance practices across site facilities.

Essential Duties

Among other responsibilities, as a Technical Advisor, you will be accountable for:

  • Technical Support: Supports operations and maintenance teams with electrical maintenance in key areas like crushing and grinding.
  • Maintenance Oversight & Supervision: Oversees all types of maintenance work—planned, break-in and breakdown to ensure tasks are completed on time, follow the maintenance plan, and help minimise equipment downtime.
  • Standards & Compliance: Makes sure all electrical work follows AS3000 and site standards and that any changes go through Management of change process.
  • Improvements & Upgrades: Actively involved in suggesting improvement opportunities, identify obsolescent parts and ensuring availability of critical spars.
  • Document Management: Keeps technical documents like drawings and datasheets accurate, up to date, and ready for audits.
  • Preventative Maintenance Strategy: Responsible for reviewing weekly plan, reviewing PM procedures, ensuring PM hours are accurate, liaising with operations for equipment availability for PM scheduled tasks.

Training & Experience

Our ideal Technical Advisor - Electrical should possess:

  • Current Electrical Licence (essential)
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical roles within large mining or heavy industrial environments, including leadership responsibilities, with strong hands-on experience in fixed plant maintenance—particularly in grinding and crushing circuits (essential)
  • High voltage switching and HV power reticulation experience (highly regarded)
  • Good skills in applying Australian electrical standards, particularly the AS3000 wiring rules. (essential)
  • Previous expat experience working in a remote location in a developing country (advantageous)
  • Cert IV in Instrumentation (preferred)
  • Current driver's licence (essential)

Working Conditions

For this opportunity, Lihir is offering a 22:20 FIFO roster from a range of designated marshalling points.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
