About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
Mechanical Technician supports safe and efficient power and utilities operations by executing inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities on mechanical equipment, ensuring asset reliability, compliance, and continuous plant availability.
Essential Duties
Maintenance & Reliability
- Perform routine mechanical inspections on plant and utility equipment
- Identify defects early and report for planned maintenance intervention
- Assist in breakdown repairs to restore equipment functionality
- Monitor asset condition and performance trendS
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Carry out mechanical repairs, adjustments, and component replacements
- Support calibration and testing of mechanical systems
- Ensure equipment meets operational and reliability standards
Management & Documentation
- Maintain accurate maintenance records (repairs, parts, inspections)
- Update equipment history and maintenance logs
- Provide input for proactive maintenance planning
Spare Parts & Inventory Support
- Track usage of critical spare parts
- Support availability of essential components
- Assist in inventory control processes
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all site safety protocols, standards, and procedures
- Apply safe work practices during all maintenance activities
- Participate actively in safety meetings and initiatives
- Stop unsafe work and escalate hazards immediately
Continuous Improvement
- Identify recurring mechanical issues and recommend improvements
- Contribute ideas to improve maintenance efficiency and reliability
- Support a zero-harm safety culture
Training & Experience
- Mechanical Trade Certificate (e.g., Fitter, Diesel Fitter, Mechanical Technician) or equivalent recognized qualification
- Completion of apprenticeship or formal trade training program
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical maintenance within mining, processing, power generation, or heavy industrial environments
- Experience with rotating and static plant equipment (e.g., pumps, engines, compressors, conveyors, or utility systems) (contextual application aligned to P&U)
- Proven exposure to breakdown maintenance, fault finding, and preventive maintenance activities
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, manuals, and maintenance procedures
- Competence in using maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively
- Basic understanding of condition monitoring and defect identification
- Experience with maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP/CMMS) for work order execution and history recording
- Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and adherence to site procedures
- Experience in power and utilities systems (diesel generation, water, steam, or fuel systems)
- Exposure to reliability maintenance and condition monitoring programs
- High-risk work licenses (rigging, confined space, working at heights – if applicable to role)
