Health & Hygiene Specialist (Mt Hagen Based)

CARE International in PNG is recruiting a Health & Hygiene Officer for its WASH Project.

The water, sanitation and hygiene project (WASH) aim to improve access to WASH services in up to 50 schools, 9 health care facilities and 200 communities in Hagen Central by helping them achieve open defecation-free status and improving hygiene practices and services.

The Health & Hygiene Specialist is responsible for providing technical support for the design and delivery of health and hygiene activities. He/she will ensure efficient and effective planning and monitoring of project activities to achieve project outcomes. This position is also responsible for leading health and hygiene capacity development initiatives for partners and CARE staff. This position will oversee health and hygiene officer and collaborate with other staff to deliver WASH project activities. The Health and Hygiene Specialist has no direct reports. This position is based in Mt Hagen, but may require travel to rural, remote project sites.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Community Development, Health and Hygiene or equivalent and/or minimum 5years relevant work experience, preferably in WASH preferably for an International Non-Government Organisation (INGO) or public sectors;
  • Ability to work and operate with minimum supervision
  • Knowledge of donor practices and humanitarian / development programming;
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the organisation with high level external audiences;
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, decision making, problem solving, planning, analytical and influencing skills;
  • Demonstrated understanding of gender equality and a commitment to CARE’s approach and values including ethnic diversity and cultural sensitivity;
  • Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills, including the ability to plan and manage workflows and balance competing priorities to ensure timely processing to meet deadlines in a complex environment;
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, decision making, problem solving, planning, analytical and influencing skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively leading staff, people management and motivating a team;
  • Demonstrated characteristics in honesty, reliability, trustworthiness with the ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Representational skills including developing networks and relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in both Pidgin and English;
  • Be available to travel/work on weekends and outside normal working hours: and

Fully conversant in Microsoft Office with knowledge in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
