Hygiene Promotion Officers (Mt Hagen Based)

CARE International in PNG is recruiting 2x Hygiene Promotion Officers for its WASH Project.

The water, sanitation and hygiene project (WASH) aim to improve access to WASH services in up to 50 schools, 9 health care facilities and 200 communities in Hagen Central by helping them achieve open defecation-free status and improving hygiene practices and services.

The Hygiene Promotion Officers are responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring of hygiene promotion activities as part of the WASH projects. Moreover, s/he will be responsible, offering daily guidance, planning to the WASH project team, facilitating Hygiene Promotion approaches, methodologies and technologies in selected schools health clinics and communities. The Hygiene Promotion Officer has no direct report. This position is based in Mt Hagen, but may require travel to rural, remote project sites.


  • Minimum technical diploma and/or vocational training in health and hygiene, International Development, Gender, or other related fields and/or minimum 3 years relevant work experience in hygiene promotion, community development, WASH, capacity strengthening preferably for an International Non-Government Organisation (INGO);
  • Experience working in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea;
  • Demonstrated understanding of health and hygiene promotion and a commitment to CARE’s approach and values;
  • Proven skills and experience in facilitating training and capacity-building initiatives with diverse range of target audience;
  • Representational skills including developing networks and relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated understanding on gender equality, child protection and social inclusion;
  • Demonstrated experience in following standard policies, procedures and processes and ensure the implementation of basic standard transactions including the management and acquittal of a cash advance;
  • Physically fit and able to travel and work in remote locations;
  • Ability to work and operate with minimum supervision;
  • Be available to travel/work on weekends and outside normal working hours;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbal, in Tok Pisin (fluent) and English; and
  • Intermediate knowledge in Microsoft Office,(Word, Excel, Outlook etc) and numeric skills
