Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. In PNG, MSF has been working since 2005 in places such as Lae, Tari and Bougainville. MSF is now extending its activities in order to support the Department of Health to improve access to care for tuberculosis patients in Gulf Province.
We are looking for a Laboratory Technician in Kerema.
The position will support the strengthening of laboratory activities in the Kerema General Hospital, focusing on the MSF TB activities and supervising the Laboratory activities in the outreach projects.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Prepare and perform diagnostic tests using prescribed techniques according to MSF protocols and health and safety standards. Perform MTB RIF GeneXpert tests and the required maintenance and calibration procedures of the equipment. Prepare smears for ZN staining and the reading of slides for Acid Fast Bacilli.
Regular cleaning and maintenance of the TB laboratory and other equipment such as the microscope and the ventilated work station. Ensure that a stock management system of laboratory supplies is in place.
Management and control of the cold chain when transporting clinical samples as well as laboratory reagents as required. Assist and offer advice to other MSF staff in the transport of clinical laboratory specimens.
Follow infection control protocols in the reception, processing and analyses of sputum and other clinical specimens.
Participate in the quality assurance program within the laboratory and with other external partners such as the MSF NCD TB Laboratory and the Central Public Health Laboratory in Port Moresby
Maintenance of accurate and reliable TB registers both manually and using electronic spreadsheets
Prepare clinical specimens and the required documents for transport to other clinical laboratories in Port Moresby as well as follow up of results when required.
Liaise with other members of the MSF team as well as General Hospital staff in the collection and proper transport of good quality sputum samples and other clinical specimens.
Fixed-term contract with probation period with possibility of renewal
Candidates must be flexible with working hours and willing to work according to a roster
Relocation package available: housing allowance, transportation (beginning, once yearly and end). Only applicable to staff who come from outside gulf province.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
12 month of experience in Laboratory
MLA or RLA training candidate preferred
Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken. Ability to speak and understand local Kerema dialect/s desirable
Basic knowledge in Microsoft Word/Excel.
Previous experience with international organisation is an asset (volunteer or professional)
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team
Commitment, reliability, flexibility
Priority will be given to Kerema local staff
Experience working with Gene Xpert machine is an advantage.
