POSITION: Language Technology Specialist

DEPARTMENT: LS-Language Development

RESPONSIBLE TO: Language Development Manager or Senior Manager of Language

Services or DO-DLS

PURPOSE: To provide training and support to language teams in the area of language

technology in order to maximize the efficiency and guarantee high quality outcomes


  • Install and configure current recommended language software and train users.
  • Provide ongoing user support for a positive experience in the use of recommended language software.
  • Guide language programs according to the best practices in language technology use.
  • Mentor and train others in language technology if and when necessary.
  • Assist in workshops where applicable.
  • Travel to different locations to assist and train in Language Software when necessary.
  • Clearly report bugs and issues encountered back to the software developers or to the Area Language Technology Coordinator.
  • Assisting Language Software Coordinator with other tasks as assigned by LD Manager or the Senior Manager forLanguage Services


  • A bachelor degree or diploma in computing or IT related field and/or equivalent.
  • Three years or more experience using computers and a strong familiarity with computer concepts.
  • Advanced skills in MS Windows and Linux, and able to troubleshoot translation/linguistics software such as Paratext, SayMore, and other additional software if and when needed.
  • Experience working in a language program is preferable, but must at least be familiar with the field methods in use in the language programs.
  • Previous multicultural experience is preferred.
  • Competent in English is necessary for finding solutions on the web.
  • Competent in the language(s) used (e.g. Tok Pisin) at the location as required by the entity or team leader


  • Devout Christian committed to the work of SIL-PNG.
  • Able to quickly learn, understand and evaluate new language technology software and assess its appropriateness for the area of assignment.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, and be able to communicate well with others in order to discover and share solutions to problems.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Must have responsible and professional work habits.
  • Must have a friendly disposition in working with language teams and colleagues alike.
  • Must view this job as a ministry more than a job.
  • Understands the value of sharing resources internally, with partners, and with appropriate public audiences.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
