The Department is spread over University’s two campuses, with the Bulolo campus located 3 hours drive from main campus and surrounded by PNG’s largest Araucaria and Pine plantations and PNG’s largest downstream processor of Timber. The Department offers a 4- year Bachelor and 3-year Diploma in Forestry.

Principal Technical Officer (Herbarium Curator)

Forestry department seeks a self-directed researcher with a strong background in Herbarium Curation and Field Botany. The successful candidate will be responsible for the curation and management of the Department (L.J. Brass) Herbarium.

Reporting to the Head of Forestry Department, the successful candidate will hold a minimum a Bachelor of Science degree in biology or forestry, or in a related field (a graduate degree also is preferred), and a minimum of five years of experience applying this knowledge in herbarium, botanical garden, museum, or in biodiversity conservation positions. The successful candidate is expected to assist lecturers in providing teaching material and demonstrating in forest botany subjects.

She/he must demonstrate aptitude for botany, especially skills in plant identification (including of fresh and herbarium specimens) of:

  • the wild and cultivated flora of our area, and in plant systematic, taxonomy and nomenclature experience in the effective curation, development, and promotion of herbarium;
  • collections, and associated database management skill in performing applied field research, plant inventories, collecting and interpreting data, publishing/reporting findings and making recommendations to management that support a sound environmental interpretation of the institutional mandate and strategic plan
  • experience in the research and recovery of plant species-at-risk in PNG
  • have some experience in preparing content for and delivering or leading professional training workshops in plant identification
  • an ability to manage projects, budgets, and staff effectively (in scope, on time)
  • an ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to a broadspectrum of stakeholders
  • excellent interpersonal/supervisory and public relations skills required as some events are scheduled after hours.


Principal Technical Officer - K34,403.00 - K42,048.00 plus Domestic Market Allowance of

K2,600.00 per annum.
