The Role

We are seeking a highly technical and operationally competent Superintendent – Geothermal Operations to work at the Lihir Gold Limited operation in Papua New Guinea and to reside residentially on the project.

The successful applicant will lead the Mine Geothermal Team and other professionals to provide geothermal risk management and geothermal technical support to the Mine Technical and Operations teams.

The ideal candidate must have work experience on and exposure to geothermal and geotechnical monitoring systems. You will also develop and implement mid to long-term departmental plans, changes, and initiatives to achieve overall business goals by providing positive leadership, direction & guidance within the department and wider organisation.

Additional scope of work will cover:

Safety

  • Drive and influence proactive safety behaviors within workgroups through visible leadership.
  • Ensure all personnel, visitors and contractors comply with site and contractual HSE requirements and hold people accountable for adherence.
  • Plan work so that it can be conducted safely; and consider environmental conditions, nearby activities, and the people and other resources needed to complete the work.
  • Work in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newcrest Safety System, Safety Policies and Procedures, and Newcrest Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility for own health and safety whilst setting clear expectations of relevant legal obligations, safe workplace practices, and HSE operating practices to others, holding them accountable for their actions.

Production

  • Identify and manage geothermal hazards and associated risks successfully in the open pit by capturing and analysing geotechnical drilling, mapping, and temperature data and through field regular inspections.
  • Develop and communicate mine geothermal risk reviews for yearly, quarterly, and monthly mine plans.
  • Provide updated geoscientific information and technical project management to all stakeholders through reports and meetings as required by the Superintendent.
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance for the section and Department.
  • Develop, scope, and manage technical projects using the site's appropriate project management tools, and track against relevant KPIs and performance metrics including coordinating with various departments and consultants (if any) as required.

Cost

  • Deliver work within the approved budget managing any variances in accordance with the escalation process.
  • Actively seek cost reduction opportunities.

Qualifications and technical experience include but are not limited to:

  • Tertiary qualified Bachelor of Science (Geology) or Engineering (Geotechnical, Reservoir) (essential).
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience in a mining environment in a geotechnical/geothermal position (essential).
  • At least 7 years of experience in a senior supervisory capacity (essential).
  • Leadership / Management qualifications (desirable).
  • Competent with modeling software such as Minesight, and Leapfrog (preferable).
  • Experience with project management (preferable).
  • Ability to review departmental financial data & results to assess performance and identify opportunities for maximising results, reducing risk, and implementing cost management initiatives.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines and self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously.
  • Sound planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training.

Mobilisation Requirements

  • This is a RESIDENTIAL-based role living on the island for Lihir Gold Limited in PNG.
  • Ability to provide/obtain a valid police clearance.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
