ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:

The Institute of Business Studies (IBS), from its’ humble beginning in 1987 as an arm of Nades & Associates primarily providing revision classes for the needs of Papua New Guinea Institute of Accountants (now CPA PNG), has evolved into a private University level Institution over the last thirty-four years. It has elevated as a University in January 2017 and offering its own degree programmes in the fields of Accounting & Finance, Business & Management, Economics & Development Studies and Information Technology.

Today we are one of the largest business schools in the country and continue to grow into the future. These successes are the fruits of our dedicated team member’s commitment to making a difference in Papua New Guinea through their efforts in helping educate fellow citizens.

The University is affiliated with the Southern Cross University (SCU) of Australia since 1999 and offers its degree programmes in Accounting, Business, and Information Technology. The affiliation with Southern Cross University has made IBS the first and only Institution to offer internationally recognised Bachelor programmes face to face in Papua New Guinea.

The Academic role fosters great student experience and student-centered learning across the organisation by employing a student journey model that empowers and holds respective students to account for their role in their student life.

The Assistant Lecturer plays a pivotal role to ensure we have a highly engaged and productive students that enriched through education in unison to prosper in their life goals and achievements. As the gatekeeper of our student’s success, you will promote student management best practices that can be easily digested and embraced across the organisation.

The Assistant Lecturer is responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining a modern Academic function that is digital on the inside—harnessing digital + cloud technologies to effectively capture and manage all aspects of delivering the best student experience for the Institution. Overseeing and managing the entire lecturing process, you will ensure all students are engaged both academically and socially to maintain a healthy balance and effectively utilising our finite academic infrastructure resources.

The Assistant Lecturer reports to the respective Head of School. This position incorporates a high degree of unsupervised work; as an outcome-focused person, you will display strong conflict resolution skills and enjoy managing your workload and being part of a productive team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

In a highly student-focused role, the Assistant Lecturer should focus on strong collaboration, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills. It is also essential that you understand Global Management Best Practices, and local industry trends. Assistant Lecturer duties will involve managing activities such as lesson planning, preparation & research, encouraging personal development via tutorial / pastoral work, lecturing, checking and assessing students work. Assistant Lecturer duties include but are not limited to the following:

Lectures:

  • Ensure quality of lectures and complete the syllabus within the scheduled time
  • Ensure timely start and finish of the lectures
  • Use all the available teaching aids for better understanding and delivery of the units
  • Ensure the benchmark for lectures is achieved in the KPM’s at the end of the semester

Student Learning Experience:

  • Provide a high-quality learning experience to students, assisting them to achieve prescribed learning outcomes
  • Supervise student projects and academic elements of field trips as and when required
  • Supporting students’ extra-curricular activities
  • Act as personal tutor, giving first-line support and mentoring to students
  • Carry out Student Counseling as per Strategic Directions
  • Student Pastoral Care

Lesson Preparation, Assessment & Examination Duties

  • Design, develop and prepare and conduct face to face, online and co-operative programs as allocated that inspire strong discussions and keep students interested and engaged
  • Ensure that unit / course design and delivery comply with quality standards and regulations of the University and College
  • Assist in the conduct of examinations (e.g., paper setting, marking, supervision and invigilation)
  • Prepare and Submit DRMS in a timely manner

Course Materials Review

    • Provide assistance to Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and other Assistant Lecturers in matters of developing course materials and in all matters relating to conducting lectures and research
      • Be responsible for the development and review of the curriculum of all IBS courses offered in the School
      • Provide support as a team member in other operational activities as and when required
      • Ensure course material reviewed is relevant to the intended learning outcomes of the course

General Duties:

    • Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development
    • Develop strong relationships with colleagues within the department and throughout the Institution for an enhanced learning environment that values interdisciplinary study
    • Attend and present at relevant conferences and share knowledge and insights gained with the other schools
    • Carry out research and produce publications or other research outputs
    • Liaise closely with teaching, technical and administration
    • Taking administrative responsibilities as requested by your Head of School, Division, and Registrar
    • Provide support as a team member in other operational activities as and when required

The following criteria is considered to be ESSENTIAL:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Higher in any of the following fields: Accounting, Business, Management, Marketing, Human Resources & Information Technology
  • Proven working experience as teacher / tutor for at least 2 years in the area of qualification
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students and all levels of employees and management
  • Excellent business judgement, analytical and decision-making skills
  • Ability to review programme design on a regular basis to ensure compliance with quality standards and academic regulations and to make alterations where appropriate.
  • Ability to demonstrate equivalent core knowledge in units taken
  • Ability to use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
  • Capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, management, other organizations and external stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate and impart complex conceptual ideas in a variety of way – presentations, reports, journal articles etc.
  • Ability to plan workloads and projects and manage resources effectively
  • Sound Computer skills
  • Good work ethics, of sober habits and with the right attitude
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Great customer focus and team player
  • Excellent active listening and presentation skills
  • Managing succession planning of staff
  • Ability to develop ideas and new student-centered approaches responding to individual learning styles
  • Effective time management skills and attention to detail

The following criteria is considered to be DESIREABLE:

      • Experience working in a tertiary environment
      • Experience in educating and coaching staff
      • Demonstrated teaching skills
      • Demonstrated research skills
      • The role is based at IBS Mt Eriama Campus but is required to support other sites for the responsive delivery of services and to maintain liaison with all key stakeholders.
      • The role is also required to liaise with external regulatory authorities at their place of business outside University premises.
      • Some attendance outside normal working hours may be required from time to time for effective performance of the position.
