About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

Your Impact

As an Advisor Electrical, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical systems across our Power and Utilities department. You’ll be the go-to expert for technical guidance supporting maintenance execution, driving compliance, and championing continuous improvement initiatives.

As part of our team, you will

  • Technical Support: Provide expert electrical support across critical infrastructure including boilers, water treatment, fuel farm, incinerators, power generation, and HV distribution systems.
  • Maintenance Oversight & Supervision: Oversees all types of maintenance work—planned, break-in and breakdown to ensure tasks are completed on time, follow the maintenance plan, and help minimise equipment downtime.
  • Standards & Compliance: Ensure all electrical work complies with AS3000 and site-specific standards, with changes managed through the appropriate management of change processes.
  • Improvements & Upgrades: Identify opportunities for system improvements, identify obsolescent parts and ensure availability of critical spares.
  • Document Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including drawings and datasheets, to meet audit and operational requirements.
  • Preventative Maintenance Strategy: Drive effective preventative maintenance by reviewing weekly plans, procedures, and resource allocations. Coordinate equipment availability and support shutdown, future and end of life planning.
  • Safety: Champion a proactive safety culture by ensuring all electrical maintenance activities comply with site-specific safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Coaching: Mentor and develop the national workforce, building long-term capability and technical self-sufficiency through hands-on coaching and guidance.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Extensive experience working in electrical roles within large-scale mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Current Electrical Licence is essential.
  • Trade certificate in Electrical or Electrical and Instrumentation.Current driver’s licence is essential.
  • Proven leadership experience with a strong track record in coordination and team oversight.
  • Strong knowledge and proficiency in applying Australian electrical standards, including AS3000 wiring rules.
  • Demonstrated experience with Instrumentation, Motor Controls, Automation, LV Distribution is essential.
  • High voltage switching and HV power reticulation experience is desirable.
  • Familiarity with asset management systems such as SAP.
  • Sound mechanical aptitude to support electrical work and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills to support national workforce development.
  • Demonstrates a proactive attitude with strong initiative, self-drive, and proven competency, while being well-organised and able to manage themselves effectively.
  • Previous expatriate experience in remote or international environments is advantageous.

Your work environment

This is a 2-year, full-time fixed-term role offered on a 22:20 FIFO roster from Australia to Lihir Island.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
