POSITION TITLE: Boarding House Manager

LOCATION: Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy, Balimo, Western Province
TYPE / DURATION: Full-time, fixed term
REMUNERATION: Competitive Salary Package
REPORTING TO: Principal

THE BALIMO COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS:

The Balimo College educational campus was established by SDP in 2019 to build the education and health standards and pathways for the Western Province. Through the college, SDP delivers tertiary qualifications in Teaching under the Balimo Teachers College program; provides secondary school certification and GPA upgrades through Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE); supports schools in the area through E-Learning programs; and in 2024, opened the Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy.

HON. ROY BIYAMA BALIMO ACADEMY (the Academy):

The Academy caters for all levels of schooling, including Early Childhood Education, Primary Schooling and Secondary Schooling, and aims to grow to support 1,000 students by the end of 2028. The Academy fosters an environment conducive to quality teaching and learning, being inclusive and responsive to additional needs, and removing educational barriers for local students to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Boarding House Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management and pastoral care of students residing in the Academy boarding house (Grades 9–12). This role ensures a safe, supportive, and well-disciplined living environment aligned with the Academy’s values and policies. The position also involves managing boarding staff, implementing routines, and coordinating the overall welfare and personal development of students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Welfare and Pastoral Care

  • Promote the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and academic wellbeing of all boarders.
  • Develop meaningful relationships with students, based on mutual respect and trust.
  • Monitor students’ mental and physical health and wellbeing and liaise with school staff, health staff, or parents as required.
  • Create a homely, nurturing environment where students feel valued and supported.
  • Implement age-appropriate programs that promote resilience, leadership, life skills, and personal development.

Discipline and Behaviour Management

  • Maintain consistent discipline in line with the Academy’s Behaviour Policy and other relevant policies.
  • Address behavioural issues promptly and appropriately, involving school leadership and parents where necessary.
  • Promote positive behaviour, restorative practices, and respect for others.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and communications.

Staff Supervision and Rostering

  • Supervise and support residential staff (house parents, cleaners, security).
  • Prepare and maintain weekly duty rosters ensuring adequate supervision at all times.
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings and provide feedback, training, and guidance as required.
  • Foster a collaborative and respectful team culture.

Boarding House Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day operations including routines for meals, lights out, prep/study time, laundry, cleaning, and recreation.
  • Ensure boarding house facilities are clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Liaise with maintenance and cleaning teams to report and follow up on issues.
  • Manage resources and supplies within the boarding house budget.

Communication and Liaison

  • Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians about students' wellbeing and progress.
  • Work collaboratively with school leadership, teaching staff, health services, and external providers and partners.
  • Organise stakeholder meetings and respond to concerns or emergencies appropriately and professionally.

Health and Safety

  • Build and maintain a child safe environment.
  • Ensure all safety and emergency protocols are followed (fire drills, illness/injury).
  • Administer or supervise medication as per policy and maintain accurate health records.
  • Promote hygiene and health education among students.

Student Engagement and Activities

  • Organise weekend and evening activities to foster student engagement and a sense of community.
  • Encourage participation in sport, cultural events, and school functions.
  • Support academic development through structured study routines and collaboration with teaching staff.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents in a pastoral or supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively to crises or emergencies.
  • Understanding of child protection and duty of care responsibilities.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Police clearance.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in youth work, education, counselling, social work, or a related field.
  • Experience in residential or boarding environments.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and adolescent development.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The role involves flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Site accommodation may be provided for external applicants.
  • Participation in school functions and events outside regular hours.
