Atlas is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Design Manager to lead our design and drafting team across Steel Haus modular housing, structural steel and design-and-build construction projects.
This is not a role for someone who only understands design from behind a desk.
We need someone who understands how drawings translate into fabrication, construction and finished buildings — and who can make sure problems are resolved before they reach the workshop or site.
You’ll take ownership of the Atlas design function and lead projects from concept and tender design through to construction issue.
You’ll coordinate architectural, structural, civil and building-services design, making sure everything is buildable, compliant and properly coordinated.
You’ll work closely with our estimating and commercial teams to produce the drawings and design information needed to price and win work.
You’ll also work directly with our Steel Haus, fabrication and construction teams on shop drawings, detailing and practical solutions that can actually be built.
The role includes:
Leading and managing the design and drafting team.
Taking designs from concept through tender to IFC documentation.
Coordinating architectural, structural, civil and services design.
Reviewing drawings for buildability, clashes and constructability.
Managing drawing registers, revisions, standards and CAD/BIM systems.
Supporting estimating and tender submissions with drawings and design information.
Working with fabrication teams on structural steel and Steel Haus shop drawings.
Coordinating external engineers, consultants, surveyors and certifiers.
Managing design requirements for NCDC, NCD Building Board and other approving authorities.
Improving Atlas design standards, details, templates and systems.
You’ll need solid building and construction design experience and the confidence to lead a team, make decisions and keep projects moving.
You should have:
A qualification in architecture, building design, architectural drafting, civil engineering, structural engineering or a related field.
At least 7 years’ experience in building or construction design.
Previous experience leading a design or drafting team.
Advanced AutoCAD skills.
Strong knowledge of relevant Australian Standards and AS/NZS requirements.
Experience taking projects from concept through to construction documentation.
A strong understanding of detailing, constructability and value engineering.
The ability to manage several projects and deadlines at the same time.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work with clients, consultants, commercial teams, workshops and construction crews.
Experience with Revit/BIM, modular construction, structural steel fabrication, design-and-build projects and PNG building approvals will be highly regarded.
If your drawings look good but don’t work when they reach the workshop or site, this probably isn’t the role for you.
At Atlas, the design team is close to the work.
We design it.
We fabricate it.
We build it.
That means you get to see your designs move from an idea on screen to something real.
You’ll have the opportunity to lead and improve the design function across a growing PNG business working in steel, construction, housing and infrastructure.
The expectation is simple:
Produce good designs. Make them buildable. Keep projects moving. Get the details right.
Send your CV and a short cover letter to:
Use “Design Manager” in the subject line.
Applications close Thursday, 3 September 2026.
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
