About IFES:

IFES is an international, nonprofit organization that supports the building of democratic societies. IFES provides targeted technical assistance to strengthen transitional democracies. Founded in 1987 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, IFES has developed and implemented comprehensive, collaborative democracy solutions in more than 145 countries.

We are seeking an experienced Graphic Designer who can transform an edited magazine manuscript (30 pages) into a visually compelling, professionally designed publication.

The designer will be responsible for the following deliverables:

1. Magazine Design & Layout (Print and Digital-ready)

• Develop an elegant and engaging design concept consistent with the theme of the magazine
• Format all content (text, tables, quotes, interviews, photos, captions) into a professionally designed magazine layout.
• Apply a clear visual hierarchy and engaging typography for readability.
• Use color, fonts, and elements that reflect the gravity and them of the magazine.
• Incorporate side bars, pull quotes, fact boxes, and infographics to highlight key information.
• Apply page numbering, running headers/footers, and clean section breaks.

2. Graphical Elements and Infographics

• Design custom icons, data visuals, and infographics to present election data (e.g., voter turnout, timeline of reforms, women in elections etc). Low resolution samples will be provided but they will need to be recreated.
• Visualize complex information like milestones, voting systems, or historical shifts in a way that’s reader friendly. Draft concepts and information will be provided.

3. Cover Design

• Design a compelling front and back cover using logos provided, imagery, and theme. Design colors and ideas will be provided by the editorial team

4. Images & Artwork

• Source, insert, and enhance relevant imagery (provided by editorial team or sourced from stock/photo libraries).
• Ensure all images are high resolution and properly captioned as best as possible.
• Apply photo treatments if needed to ensure consistency in look and feel.

5. Final Outputs

• Final print-ready PDF (CMYK, with bleed) for professional printing.
• Web-optimized PDF for online publication.
• Optionally: Adaptation for ISSUU.

What we’re looking for

• Proven experience designing magazines or commemorative publications
• Strong Portfolio with similar publication projects
• Familiarity with development/election section work is a plus
• Ability to work with tight deadlines and in close coordination with IFES and the editorial team.

Timeline

The project will commence once it has been approved. The first draft layout will be delivered within two weeks of receiving the final content and assets. There will be up to four rounds of feedback and revisions. The final files are due by 31 August 2025.
