INCLUSION OFFICER
Community Adult Multi-disease Screening (CAMS) Project
Burnet Institute is a leading not-for-profit, unaligned and independent Australian medical research and public health organization focused on achieving better health for vulnerable communities in Australia and internationally.
Burnet Institute is seeking a committed and experienced Inclusion Officer to support Community Researchers with disabilities participating in the Community Adult Multi-disease Screening (CAMS) Project in East New Britain.
Location: Kokopo / Rabaul Districts, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea
Employment Type: Short-Term Contract – up to 40 days
Commencement: Immediate / as agreed
Reports to: Technical Lead HEO
About the Role
The Inclusion Officer will provide practical, communication and logistical support to enable Community Researchers with disabilities to participate fully and independently in training, community engagement, interviews and field activities.
The role will promote disability inclusion, accessibility, dignity, independence and equal participation, while supporting reasonable accommodations based on individual needs and preferences.
Essential Requirements
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities or in disability-inclusive programs.
  • Good understanding of disability inclusion and reasonable accommodation.
  • Proficiency in Papua New Guinea Sign Language (PNGSL) or another recognized sign language.
  • Ability to facilitate communication with Community Researchers who have hearing impairment or vision impairment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English, Tok Pisin and Kuanua.
  • Ability to work in community settings across East New Britain.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Desirable
  • Experience supporting people who are Deaf or have hearing impairment or vision impairment.
  • Knowledge of disability rights and inclusive development.
  • Experience working in community health or research projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide practical support during training, meetings and field activities.
  • Facilitate accessible communication, including sign language and other agreed communication methods.
  • Support reasonable accommodations and accessible field logistics.
  • Work with the Technical Lead and project team to identify and address accessibility barriers.
  • Respect the independence, dignity, choices and confidentiality of Community Researchers.
  • Promote disability inclusion and equal participation throughout the project.
