About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your Impact

As the Lead Commissioning, you will play a pivotal role in bringing major projects to life. You will lead the team to execute detailed plans that outline the steps and processes for project commissioning, ensuring technical excellence, alignment with project objectives, and a safe, successful transition from construction to operation. In doing so, you will ensure that systems, equipment, and processes are commissioned to the highest standards, supporting Newmont’s commitment to operational excellence, safety, and sustainable performance.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead and manage the planning and execution of detailed commissioning steps and resources.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a multidisciplinary team of Supervisors, Electricians, Instrument Fitters, and Commissioning Technicians, fostering an inclusive environment that supports growth and delivers lasting benefits to the workforce.
  • Coordinate commissioning tasks, ensuring all systems and equipment are tested, validated, and compliant with specifications.
  • Align commissioning activities with project timelines in collaboration with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate testing and validation processes to confirm operational readiness and performance standards.
  • Verify and document commissioning activities, including test results and validation reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, and safety requirements.
  • Provide regular progress updates and detailed reports on outcomes, risks, and mitigation measures.
  • Champion safety and risk management throughout commissioning activities.
  • Lead and develop your team, fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where members feel empowered to contribute, collaborate, and grow.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

You are a highly skilled commissioning professional with a strong technical foundation and proven leadership experience in complex project environments. With a background in mining, processing plants, and hazardous facilities, you thrive in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant commissioning outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a relevant Trade Qualification (dual trade in Instrumentation, Electrical, and Hazardous Areas highly regarded).
  • Significant leadership experience within Owner or PMC/EPC organizations, ideally with a successful track record in the mining sector.
  • Advanced proficiency in commissioning processes, including planning, supervision, testing, validation, documentation, and compliance.
  • A strong background in electrical and instrumentation and experience with commissioning mining equipment and hazardous facilities (e.g., oxygen plants).
  • Hands-on experience across processing plants, installation, commissioning, sustaining capital, and OPEX projects.
  • Strong project management and risk mitigation skills, with the ability to align activities with strategic objectives.
  • Familiarity with QA systems (S1, S2, S3) and the sign-off processes required for achieving mechanical completion and commissioning compliance.
  • Proven problem-solving and fault-finding skills, with a focus on governance, compliance, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across site operations, business readiness, and project execution teams.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop high-performing teams, while working effectively with a national workforce.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, demonstrating energy, adaptability, and a strong commitment to excellence.

Your expertise, leadership, and collaborative approach will be instrumental in delivering safe, compliant, and successful commissioning outcomes.

Your work environment

This exciting opportunity is offered on a 22:20 Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) roster from Australia or PNG to Lihir Island. You’ll primarily work day shifts, with the flexibility to support night shifts when required. As part of the role, you’ll also play a key part in shutdowns and commissioning lead activities, where your expertise will directly contribute to the safe and successful delivery of critical project milestones.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
