About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from academics with demonstrated expertise in Climate Change and Environmental Sciences for appointment as Lecturer I or Lecturer II within the Department of Climate Change, School of Environment & Climate Change.

The role is based at Vudal Campus with responsibilities extending to field sites and community locations across East New Britain Province. The appointment places strong emphasis on climate science, applied research, teaching excellence, and community and policy engagement, aligned with national climate priorities and international environmental frameworks.

The successful appointee will contribute to teaching, research, professional scholarship, and applied services supporting climate resilience, environmental management, and sustainable development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, and related disciplines, using outcomes-based and applied teaching approaches.
  • Design and deliver field-based teaching, community engagement activities, and applied learning experiences across East New Britain Province and relevant locations.
  • Supervise student research projects and contribute to academic scholarship in climate change, environmental systems, and sustainable development.
  • Conduct and publish applied and scholarly research in areas such as climate change impacts, ecological assessment, environmental health, renewable energy, or climate adaptation.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, course coordination, and continuous quality improvement in accordance with university academic standards.
  • Support professional and policy-oriented activities, including short courses, workshops, seminars, and stakeholder forums.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with government agencies, research institutions, NGOs, and community organisations.
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university committees and academic governance processes.
  • Mentor junior academic staff, tutors, and technical personnel.
  • Undertake other academic and administrative duties as directed by the Head of Department.

Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile

  • Master’s degree (MA, MPhil, MSc) or PhD in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Health, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • Candidates with a PhD and 2–5 years of relevant postdoctoral, industry, government, or NGO experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated capability to teach and contribute academically at Lecturers I or II level.
  • Strong understanding of climate change science, environmental systems, and sustainable development challenges relevant to Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.
  • Experience conducting applied research, fieldwork, or community-based environmental projects.
  • Ability to contribute to quality assurance, academic governance, and curriculum development.
  • Competence in research methods, data analysis, and reporting; experience with statistical or analytical tools is desirable.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and present findings to diverse audiences.
  • High standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, resilience, and commitment to community and environmental outcomes.

K48,382.26 – K59,132.71
