About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

About the opportunity

Are you a strategic leader with a passion for project delivery, operational readiness, and driving results?

We are seeking a dynamic results-driven leader to oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of sustaining capital projects and to ensure operational readiness for major projects. This is your opportunity to be the key driver of high-value, site-managed projects that directly enable long-term operational success.

You will be leading from the front where engineering excellence meets strategic thinking, safety, and impactful leadership. You will be:

The Site’s Project Authority – Lead the design, development, and safe execution of sustaining capital projects. You’ll manage the entire pipeline from studies to completion.

The Readiness Champion – Drive the operational readiness for enterprise projects (e.g. NSB), aligning site deliverables with global project milestones.

A Trusted Strategic Partner – Be the single point of contact for the General Manager and site leadership on all project matters, risks, and opportunities.

A Culture Builder – Shape an inclusive and safety-first environment, develop high-performing teams, and act as a role model for leadership and technical excellence.

Your Impact

As the Manager Sustaining Capital & Operational Readiness, you will:

  • Lead the successful planning, budgeting, and execution of all sustaining capital projects on site, ensuring alignment with Newmont’s global stage gate process.
  • Own the operational readiness roadmap for major projects, collaborating closely with enterprise project teams to ensure all requirements are delivered and integrated into operations.
  • Build robust project delivery systems and continuously improve project execution standards through innovation, feedback loops, and data-driven insights.
  • Monitor and report on all key performance indicators, including safety, community engagement, cost control, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
  • Coach, mentor, and inspire multidisciplinary project teams, building current and future capabilities while fostering an environment where ideas thrive, and people grow.
  • Drive proactive stakeholder engagement with regulators, contractors, and community representatives, maintaining compliance and trust at every step.

About You

You are a confident decision-maker with a background in major capital projects and complex site operations. You will lead with both empathy and precision, drive alignment across stakeholder groups, and make high-impact decisions backed by data, experience, and sound judgement.

To succeed in this role, you will bring the following qualifications and experience:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering, Project Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated success delivering capital projects, ideally within the mining or heavy industry sectors.
  • Proven track record in leading operational readiness initiatives tied to enterprise or site-level projects.
  • Deep knowledge of project stage gate processes, project studies, and risk-based planning.
  • Advanced understanding of HSE practices, contractor management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret operational challenges and implement structured, systemic solutions.
  • Strong financial and cost management skills with experience in project forecasting and reporting.
  • Extensive experience in building, leading, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrates strong organisational skills and the ability to effectively prioritise competing demands.
  • Highly developed communication and influencing ability across all levels.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to the Lihir Gold Mine site, PNG.

Location and working conditions

Our Brisbane-based team enjoy flexible Monday to Friday work options to balance working from home and in the office. Our modern office is based in Milton, conveniently located for public transport access, a range of local cafés and green outdoor spaces.
