The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual as Technician – Mine Communications Underground.

About the role

Reporting to the Supervisor – Communication Mining Technology, you will be responsible for supporting and maintaining communication and technology systems used in mining operations. You will follow safety procedures, assist in keeping systems running smoothly, and help improve day to day efficiency. This role requires basic technical knowledge, good teamwork, and the ability to adapt to changing work conditions

Key Responsibilities

As a Technician – Mine Communications Underground, you will:

  • Carry out tasks as directed by the Supervisor for the general operation of the underground mining technology section.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance tasks and component replacements in alignment with maintenance strategies safely, to the required standard and in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Diagnoses and repairs breakdowns as required safely, to the required standard and in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot communication equipment such as leaky feeder, network links, fiber optic networks, digital mine radio and structured cabling.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot IP camera networks.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot modular mining dispatch systems.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot wireless networks.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot tele remote networks.
  • Commission and integrate new communication technology systems that are introduced to New Porgera Limited
  • Programming Motorola radios and repeaters.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance to the highest standard and efficient manner to ensure reliability of communication systems utilized across the mining operation.
  • Must understand and contribute to the maintenance performance measures assigned to their area, (KPI’s)
  • Actively participate in the development of on-the-job training plans for apprentices and T/A’s.
  • Assist supervisors with the preparation and planning.
  • Promote high standard with environmental practices.
  • Maintain a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness and comply with all relevant NPL policies & Procedures

Qualifications and Experience

To succeed in this role, you will need;

  • Minimum of Grade 12 school certifications
  • Recognized Trade Certificate or demonstrated knowledge with communications systems in the surface and underground mining field.
  • Strong ability to demonstrate clear understanding of preventative maintenance in alignment with industry best practice.
  • Demonstrated experience to identify defects and develop repair scopes or work from preventative maintenance activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, technical drawings, operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Prepared to work a flexible company roster and to vary working hours as required to accomplish the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Sound communication, technical, planning and time management skills.
  • Prior industry recognized safety training highly desirable.
  • Current PNG Class 1 or 6 Driver's license with ability to acquire a Site LV Driving Permit.
  • Physically fit and able to work in different weather conditions

Mobilization Requirement

This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Nationals and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
