Summary

The Safety Officer will ensure a safe working environment and work with management to implement all necessary OHS and safety programs to prevent injuries and accidents. They will identify hazards, carry out inspections, conduct safety meetings, implement safety procedures, and promote safety awareness. Key responsibilities include conducting daily risk assessments and reviews, investigating incidents, recommending solutions to potential hazards and unsafe conditions, developing and implementing safety procedures, and providing training.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Safety procedures, SOPs, and programs to address specific hazards and risks.
  • Create and implement Safety Initiatives including training, job hazard analysis, risk assessments, safety committees, safety meetings, and a proactive safety approach in the workplace.
  • Investigate workplace Accidents/Incidents that occur in the workplace to determine root causes and prevent recurrence. Prepare detailed accident reports and recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Conduct safety training programs for employees to educate them about workplace hazards and safety procedures.
  • Promote health and safety awareness among all employees through various methods, including posters, announcements, and safety meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and standards.
  • Communicate safety concerns and recommendations to management.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness plans.
  • Collaborate and work with other departments, such as admin, HR and operations, to implement safety initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, investigations, and training.

Job Requirements

  • Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Minimum Grade 12 Certificate.
  • 3 - 5 years experience in role or significant experience in a similar role.
  • Familiarity with PNG Government Health & Safety Act.
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Critical thinking & analytical ability to work with & interpret data.
  • Possess a high level of computer literacy & working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Have good customer service focus and qualities.
  • Ability to organize, plan, coordinate & communicate effectively across all levels of the business.
