The opportunity

This organization is a dynamic corporation with an expanding business presence in Papua New Guinea (PNG), committed to maintaining a high level of legal compliance and efficiently managing its litigation matters. It expects prompt, effective, and legally sound advice to support its management and staff, ensuring all legal issues are resolved in the most cost-efficient manner. The role is based in Port Moresby.

The Role

This pivotal role involves providing legal support on all litigation matters, analyzing issues to identify legal problems, and advising on and representing the corporation in dispute resolution and potentially litigious matters. You'll manage and run all in-house litigation, conduct research, and provide instructions to external legal counsel. The overall objective is to deliver legally sound advice in the most effective and cost-efficient manner.

Main duties include:
  • Providing legal service to the business functions of the corporation on all litigation matters.
  • Managing and running all in-house litigation matters in consultation with the Head of Legal.
  • Conducting research on all litigious matters and determining information, counsel, and guidance on legal issues.
  • Advising on and representing the corporation on matters requiring dispute resolution and those that are potentially litigious or under litigation.
  • Managing and providing instructions in consultation with the Head of Legal to external legal counsel in litigation.
  • Preparing and providing monthly updates on the Legal (Litigation) Register.
  • Advising the Business on legal developments in PNG and within the region that impact its litigation matters in Court.
Qualification and Experience:
  • Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Certificate of Admission to the Supreme and National Courts of Papua New Guinea.
  • Admitted to practice law in the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea.
  • Current member of the PNG Law Society.
  • 8+ years post admission experience / practice in commercial and civil litigation.
  • Demonstrable post-admission experience in finance and banking and commercial and corporate litigation.
  • Excellent analytical and legal research skills, with strong advocacy skills.
  • Ability to identify commercial solutions and provide sound and practical advice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment undergoing significant and rapid change.
  • Prior banking and finance experience is advantageous (but not a requirement).
