About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your Impact

As Superintendent Mine Planning, you will play a critical role in shaping short- to medium-term mine plans that align with Newmont’s long-term strategy, production goals, and regulatory standards. Your leadership will directly influence operational efficiency, safety, and continuous improvement across the Lihir site.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

  • Lead the development and execution of mine plans from 2 years to 1 day.
  • Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly planning and performance reconciliation.
  • Drive continuous improvement through design revisions, fleet assessments, and financial reviews.
  • Support and guide mine operations to enhance effectiveness and safety.
  • Manage consultants and contracts, ensuring alignment with project goals and standards.
  • Lead and develop a team of 25, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work culture.

Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field is essential.
  • Advanced proficiency in mine design, scheduling, and performance reconciliation.
  • Strong knowledge of mine operations, dispatch systems, and risk management.
  • Experience in project and contract management.
  • Proven leadership and team development skills.
  • Familiarity with mining software and cost modelling tools is highly regarded (Deswik & MineSight are preferred).

Your Work Environment

This residential role offers the balance of a 5:2 roster, allowing you to contribute meaningfully at work while returning home to your family each evening. Beyond work, you can enjoy the best of tropical island living, with access to a vibrant range of social and recreational activities. To support your transition, our comprehensive relocation program ensures a smooth integration into the local community and includes cultural orientation, international-standard schooling (see more at https://lisstm.com.au/), quality healthcare services, and household support. Based at our Lihir site, you will collaborate closely with internal teams across geology, processing, asset management, and technical services, while also engaging with external consultants and contractors.
