About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact


As Superintendent Mine Planning, you will be responsible for developing and overseeing mine plans across time horizons ranging from two years to one day, ensuring alignment with long‑term strategies, production goals, and regulatory requirements. Your leadership will shape the accuracy, efficiency, and integrity of mine planning processes, driving continuous improvement, strengthening operational performance, and supporting safe, responsible mining. You will play a central role in coordinating planning activities, guiding technical teams, and delivering high‑quality insights that enable informed decision‑making across the operation.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

  • Lead the preparation and execution of Monthly, Weekly, and Daily mine plans to support operational delivery.
  • Develop and oversee <2‑year mine plans (Business Plan and Quarterly Forecast) to ensure alignment with the 5‑Year Plan, production targets, and regulatory obligations.
  • Manage reconciliation reporting across daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual horizons to track performance against plan and support strategic objectives.
  • Drive continuous improvement through mine design updates, block model refinements, financial and operational input reviews, and fleet assessments.
  • Provide direction, support, and influence to mine operations to enhance operational effectiveness while ensuring compliance with safety standards and mining regulations.
  • Lead and develop a team of 25, coordinating training, capability development, and proactive Fatal Risk Management processes to identify, mitigate, and monitor risks.
  • Prepare scopes of work, manage budgets, and oversee mine planning consultants and contracts, ensuring adherence to project specifications, safety standards, and organisational goals.

Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline (essential).
  • Advanced proficiency in mine design, drill and blast, mine scheduling, and performance‑to‑plan reconciliation.
  • Strong understanding of mine operations, dispatch systems, risk management, and business improvement principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in project and/or contract management.
  • Proven leadership capability with experience managing and developing technical teams.
  • Familiarity with mining software and cost‑modelling tools; advanced proficiency in mine planning and optimisation software (Deswik and MineSight highly regarded).
  • Strong problem‑solving ability, including the capacity to analyse complex information, identify patterns, and make effective decisions.
  • Well‑developed social process skills, including self‑awareness, collaboration, conflict resolution, and the ability to foster an inclusive, high‑performance team environment.

Your Work Environment

You’ll be part of a dynamic mining operation at our Lihir site, collaborating closely with internal teams across mine operations, geology, processing, asset management, and technical services, as well as engaging with external consultants and contractors. The role combines office-based planning with field-based oversight.

The role is offered on a Residential basis with a 5:2 roster, or on a FIFO basis from approved points of hire within Australia and Papua New Guinea, operating on an even-time 21:21 roster.
