About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

Your Impact

Do you have what it takes to lead essential mine services that power safe, efficient mining operations?

We have an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, experienced leader ready to take charge of surface mine support operations. In this critical role, you will oversee everything from road construction and drainage to dewatering and auxiliary equipment to ensure production runs safely, smoothly, and on time.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead and coordinate mine services to support daily surface mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable production.
  • Oversee critical activities including road construction, maintenance, drainage, dewatering, and auxiliary equipment management.
  • Develop and execute short and long-term service plans aligned with operational targets and strategic objectives.
  • Allocate resources and materials to meet production schedules while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
  • Monitor compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, and drive continuous improvement through performance analysis and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and present operational, safety, and performance reports to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with contractors to ensure adherence to project specifications, safety protocols, and contractual requirements.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

You are a qualified mining professional with a strong foundation in mine operations, planning, and technical processes. You demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, with in-depth knowledge of mine safety, health and sustainability standards, and proven experience ensuring regulatory compliance in high-risk environments. You bring:

  • Proven experience leading diverse mining teams with hands on experience in mine operations, mine planning and mine technical work.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in mining or a relevant discipline.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in civil engineering, including heavy and mobile equipment operations.
  • A hands-on leadership style that motivates, mentors, and delivers.
  • Strong knowledge of mining legislation and safety protocols.
  • Strong technical skills in resource planning, equipment coordination, and the use of mining systems and tools.
  • Confidence in analysing operational data to solve problems and improve systems.
  • A practical understanding of risk management, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement strategies.
  • Proficiency in Tok Pisin is highly valued for effective engagement with the local workforce.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a 22:20 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from Australia to Lihir Island.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
