About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Your Impact

As Superintendent Operations (Oxidation), you will be instrumental in overseeing the safe, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of our oxygen plant and autoclave facilities which comprise three oxygen plants and four autoclaves. You will drive continuous improvement, support team development, and ensure operational excellence at every stage.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead the operations of the oxygen and autoclave processes to achieve production targets and maintain compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Analyse production and performance data to optimise efficiency and reliability.
  • Conduct inspections and audits, identifying and resolving operational risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets for your area of responsibility.
  • Guide, support and develop your team through coaching, performance feedback and a focus on safety culture.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure alignment in maintenance, engineering, training, safety and environmental priorities.
  • Coordinate operational schedules to ensure effective maintenance planning to minimise disruptions.
  • Drive a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across the plant.
  • Communicate effectively with regulatory bodies and service providers as required.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

To be successful in this role, you will bring a strong combination of technical expertise, leadership capability, and strategic thinking. You thrive in complex operational environments, are committed to safety and continuous improvement, and are confident in leading teams to deliver high-performance outcomes.

  • Significant experience in autoclave and/or oxygen plant operations, including a deep understanding of process optimisation, technical requirements and safety systems.
  • Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline (preferred).
  • Strong leadership capability with a demonstrated ability to lead teams, build capability and foster collaboration.
  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and drive data-based decision making.
  • Proficient in the use of production monitoring tools, safety compliance systems, and maintenance scheduling processes.
  • Commitment to safety and a demonstrated track record of applying risk management practices.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting operational challenges and implementing practical solutions.
  • Clear communication skills and stakeholder engagement, with the ability to influence across various levels of the business.
  • Strategic and solutions-focused, with the ability to think long-term and drive continuous improvement.
  • Previous expatriate experience in remote or international environments is advantageous.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a 22:20 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from Australia or Papua New Guinea to Lihir Island, PNG.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
