About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation is located on Aniolam Island in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province. Lihir is one of the world’s largest producing gold operations and is situated within a geothermally active, extinct volcanic crater near the town of Londolovit. As a major open-pit gold operation, Lihir plays an important role in Newmont’s global portfolio and contributes significant economic and social value to Papua New Guinea and local communities.

Your role

As the Supervisor Shutdown, you will manage front-end shutdown activities to support efficient planning and execution across the Lihir operation.

This role will see you coordinate shutdown processes, supervise contractors, support execution teams and monitor shutdown performance against plan. You will play a key role in ensuring shutdown activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with operational requirements, while supporting a positive and productive team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute equipment shutdown processes in line with operational plans and site requirements.
  • Support compliance with safety protocols during shutdown activities, ensuring work is completed safely and responsibly.
  • Prepare and schedule execution plans, shutdown tasks, resource requirements and onboarding activities.
  • Assist execution teams by providing guidance and support during shutdown delivery phases.
  • Assess progress of shutdown tasks and supervise contractors involved in shutdown activities.
  • Monitor shutdown performance against plan and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Plan and deliver front-end shutdown tasks to support efficient execution.
  • Prepare new employees and team members on shutdown procedures and expectations.
  • Execute regular inspections of front-end equipment to support safe and reliable operations.
  • Assess relevant risks, apply mitigation measures and continuously monitor risk throughout shutdown activities.

Your Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a relevant trade qualification.
  • Several years’ experience in shutdown execution, maintenance, process operations, engineering or a related operational environment.
  • Experience in engineering process safety management, mechanical systems monitoring, preventive maintenance and safety audits.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, support and develop teams in an operational environment.
  • Experience managing complex work execution, including planning, coordination and contractor supervision.
  • Strong understanding of engineering standards, process safety management systems and risk mitigation practices.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, environment and sustainability regulations and practices.
  • Ability to monitor performance using KPIs, metrics, data recording and reporting.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to interact, influence and resolve conflict across multiple teams.
  • Understanding of project cost management and financial principles will be highly regarded.

Desirable experience includes experience in complex shutdown delivery within mining, processing or heavy industry environments, exposure to contractor management, practical knowledge of front-end shutdown planning and execution, and the ability to identify improvement opportunities across shutdown performance, safety, cost and schedule outcomes.

Work Environment & Benefits

This is a full-time FIFO expat role based at Lihir Gold Limited in Papua New Guinea, working on a 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off days-only roster. You will support Operations and Process Operations, working closely with functional leaders, cross-functional supervisors, advisors, specialists, coordinators, project teams, HSE, technicians, engineers, contractors, suppliers and service providers.

You will be part of a team focused on safe shutdown delivery, effective planning, practical execution support and continuous improvement across shutdown performance.
