About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

As Team Lead, Mine Training, you will coordinate and deliver end‑to‑end mining training programs that build a safe, skilled, and high‑performing workforce. Leading a team of trainers, you will support competency‑based training for mine operators, maximise the effective use of simulators, and work closely with leaders to assess capability needs and plan impactful training solutions. By maintaining up‑to‑date training materials, ensuring safety and compliance, monitoring effectiveness, and reporting on outcomes, you will play a key role in delivering practical, results‑driven training. Your leadership will ensure our people have the skills, confidence, and capability to perform at their best.

As part of our team, you will

Lead and support a team of trainers, fostering consistency, quality, and compliance across all training activities. Through strong people leadership and hands-on technical involvement, you will ensure competency‑based training is delivered effectively, records are accurately maintained, and safe work practices are upheld at all times.

  • Implement and execute mining training programs aligned with departmental objectives.
  • Liaise with the Lead Technical Training and department heads to assess needs and plan training strategies.
  • Maintain and continuously improve training materials in line with industry standards and technology.
  • Monitor and evaluate training effectiveness using feedback and performance data, reporting outcomes accordingly.
  • Supervise, mentor, and guide trainers to ensure consistent delivery of training content.
  • Deliver and oversee competency‑based training for mine operators, including simulator utilisation.
  • Ensure full utilisation and ongoing support of training simulators.
  • Maintain accurate training documentation and compliance records.
  • Provide hands-on technical support during training sessions as required.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and operational protocols, with authority to stop unsafe work.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

To succeed in this role, you will bring a strong blend of technical expertise, training capability, and people leadership, underpinned by sound judgement and a practical, solutions‑focused mindset.

  • Trade or tertiary qualifications in Mining, Training, or a related technical discipline, supported by relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in mining training program development, delivery, and assessment, ideally within operational mining environments.
  • Proven people leadership capability, with the ability to mentor, guide, and motivate trainers while fostering a positive and productive team culture.
  • Strong working knowledge of mining operations, including safety, operational, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to complete structured procedural tasks while adapting methods where required.
  • Confidence in following established processes, while identifying opportunities to improve ways of working through experience and observation.
  • Practical problem‑solving skills, using judgement, trial and error, and collaboration to overcome challenges or seek support when needed.
  • Advanced proficiency in technical training development, delivery, and team leadership, appropriate to a Team Lead level.
  • Experience with competency‑based training frameworks, training simulators, and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Strong understanding of training effectiveness assessment, performance monitoring, and compliance documentation.
  • High level of computer literacy, with the ability to manage training records, systems, and reporting requirements efficiently.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a 21:21 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) day shift roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea,

You will work within Newmont’s People and Technical Training function, partnering closely with operational leaders and technical specialists. This role provides the opportunity to work in a dynamic mining environment where safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement are core to how we operate.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
