REPORTING TO: Deputy Principal- Balimo College School of Nursing

ABOUT BALIMO COLLEGE:

Balimo College is Western Province’s newest Higher Education Institute. In 2025, Balimo College opened the new School of Nursing and commenced a 4-year Bachelor of General Nursing program. The College’s vision is to advance Western Province by providing high-quality education, research and community engagement. The institute will foster pathways for teachers and nurses who are committed to improving access to vital services in Western Province.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Balimo College School of Nursing Tutor is responsible for supporting the Principal and Lecturers of the College to uphold the College’s Vision, Mission, Core Values, Educational Philosophy and Goals. The Tutor will operate within the Balimo College School of Nursing faculty as determined by the Principal through the Governing Council, to disseminate strong, effective educational support to support students within the parameters identified in this position description.

The Tutor will have an in-depth knowledge of the ethos and purpose of the Balimo College School of Nursing and the principles by which it operates. The Tutor will have a firm understanding of the Western Province education context and the objectives of Balimo College School of Nursing to create pathways for rural communities into the field of nursing.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants must demonstrate that they are able to meet the following Key Selection Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Experience in Midwifery, Paediatrics, Acute Care, or Mental Health
  • Minimum 3 years of teaching experience.
  • Strong clinical skills and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Be willing to relocate to Balimo College campus.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in PNG.

Knowledge of:

  • A range of educational theories, techniques, and methodologies of personnel and management.
  • Principles and practices of supervision.
  • PNG Nursing Council Standards.
  • Bachelor of Nursing Curriculum.
  • DHERST requirements for a School of Nursing.

Ability to:

  • Provide support, direction and motivation to students.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and students.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures to students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate a computer to a good level of competence.
  • Analyse situations accurately in a classroom context and support an effective course of actions.
  • Support timelines for the academic delivery of curriculum, mentoring and assessments.
  • Plan, organise and prioritise work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Tutor is responsible for:

  • Upholding and supporting the Principal and teaching team in delivering the vision for the Balimo College School of Nursing.
  • Exercising discernment and care in assisting the Principal and teaching team with supporting staff, students, and parents.
  • Supporting the development and empowerment of the teaching staff that will cultivate and strengthen a positive teaching, learning, and working environment for all staff and students at every level of operations.
  • Supporting the Principal and lecturers with clinical education and support with for Balimo College School of Nursing

Vision, Mission and Culture

  • Uphold and lead others to the realisation of the Mission, Vision, Values, Educational Philosophy and Goals of the Balimo College School of Nursing in all operations.
  • Be able to hold a vision for the College and support others to the realisation of that vision.
  • Understand and maintain a College culture that will characterise the College as a place of care, academic excellence, transparency and integrity, accountability, and commitment to community.
  • Manage and advocate a strong collaborative service culture within the College and local community.

Administration

  • Be familiar with College administration procedures.
  • Attend all faculty meetings and record details if required by the principal for wider circulation to staff.
  • Be familiar with the Balimo College School of Nursing calendar and attend all calendared meetings and lectures in a timely manner.
  • Ensure personal full compliance of the College rules and behavioural expectations for yourself and your students.
  • Delivery of clinical support for the curriculum.
  • Monitor and record student’s information clearly, coherently and confidentially for the identification and conducting of learner assessments.
  • Alert the Principal to any maintenance requirements or any issues of Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures on site.

Teaching & Learning

  • Actively and pro-actively support the lecturers to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
  • Support the lecturers in tutorials and clinical placements.
  • Support the use of ICT and of developments in Digital Learning Technologies and actively support the students to enable their studies with the support of ICT.
  • Engage in the support needed to utilise technology for implementation in the classroom.
  • Support the Principal and lecturers with the delivery and moderation of assessment and reporting across whole staff cohort.
  • Support the Principal and lecturers with the delivery and management of the practicum component of the curriculum

Professional Development

  • Regularly attend Professional Development Training to keep abreast of current trends in nursing education;
  • Attend and be actively engaged in appropriate Professional Development;
  • Keep up to date with current educational thought and practice;
  • Support the Principal and lecturers to implement the Balimo College School of Nursing Professional Learning and Development Policy where it aligns to your specialism.
