About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from early-career academics and professionals with capability in Climate Change, Health, and Development for appointment as Tutor (Technical Instructor) within the Department of Climate Change, Health and Development, School of Environment & Climate Change.

This position is designed as an academic career-pathway role, supporting progression to Lecturer I and Lecturer II subject to performance, qualifications, and research development.

The role is based at Vudal Campus with responsibilities extending to field sites and community locations across East New Britain Province, including Upper Baining areas and surrounding island communities such as the Duke of York Islands.

The appointment supports the University’s strategic focus on applied climate change education, community engagement, and research-informed teaching, while building the candidate’s academic, research, and professional scholarship profile.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of undergraduate courses in Climate Change, Climate Adaptation and Mitigation, Health and Development, and related environmental disciplines, using applied and outcomes-based teaching approaches.
  • Facilitate tutorials, practical sessions, and field-based learning activities, including community-focused engagement and applied case studies.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of face-to-face and blended/online learning modules within the School of Environment & Climate Change.
  • Support student learning through consultation, assessment, and academic mentoring.
  • Contribute to applied research activities, including data collection, field studies, community-based research, and report preparation.
  • Support curriculum development, teaching materials preparation, and continuous quality improvement processes.
  • Participate in professional and community outreach activities, including workshops, short courses, and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with academic and technical staff to strengthen teaching, research, and field engagement within the Department.
  • Undertake other academic and administrative duties as directed by the Head of Department.

Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Health and Development, Social or Applied Sciences, Anthropology, Sociology, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • Relevant post-qualification experience (approximately 5–8 years) in climate change, environment, health, development, or related applied fields.
  • Demonstrated understanding of climate change adaptation, mitigation, and development challenges relevant to Papua New Guinea.
  • Capacity to contribute effectively to tutorial delivery, fieldwork, and student support at undergraduate level.
  • Familiarity with academic quality assurance processes and university teaching standards.
  • Basic research capability, including data collection, analysis, and report writing, familiarity with statistical or analytical tools is desirable.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and professional conduct skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work in field and community-based environments, including remote and island locations.

Salary Range

Tutor (Technical Instructor)
K36,288.21 – K55,632.78
(plus applicable allowances and benefits)
