Environment Supervisor

Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit an Environment Supervisor to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations Island in New Ireland Province.

The Role

Reporting to the Environment Superintendent; the Environment Supervisor is responsible for overseeing field operations and lead the planning, management, improvement, and delivery of the SGCL’s Environmental Management and Monitoring Programs.

The Environment Supervisor is expected to lead process improvement initiatives to ensure that monitoring operations and data requirements are delivered safely, efficiently, and timely whilst maintaining high levels of service and that all monitoring activities comply with the necessary quality assurance systems.

This is a FIFO position; the roster is a 21/14 roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen, Tabar group of Islands, Alotau, Buka, Goroka Hoskins, Madang, Popondetta and Wapenamanda. (Locals are encouraged to apply)

Key Responsibilities include:

Technical accountabilities

  • Leading safe work practices by ensuring safe work conditions and practices in the Department, proactively investigating all safety and health concerns, and implementing continuous safety improvement.
  • Assist the Environment Superintendent in coordinating and overseeing environment monitoring operations and the implementation of the EMMPs
  • Ensure accurate environmental reporting both internally and externally
  • Support the Environment Department to meet its environmental monitoring obligations by supporting Environment Officers/Technicians.
  1. Collection and processing of raw data
  2. Validation of the data gathered.
  3. Analysis, interpretation and reporting of data for internal and external use and.
  4. Management of databases and other supporting software.
  • Ensure data collection and analysis meets industry and international standards.
  • Ensure the onsite environmental laboratory meet the highest quality and safety standards.
  • Oversee the establishment of new sites, installation and maintenance of various monitoring instrumentation using scientific principles and theories to assist in improving environmental monitoring processes.
  • Ensure monitoring programmes are advanced through liaising, coordinating, and collaborating with internal and external parties.
  • Responsible for ensuring that monitoring programme protocols are up to date and correct
  • Identify opportunities for process and systems improvement
  • Lead and contribute to the development of innovative approaches to solving complex environmental monitoring problems
  • Ensure that requests for data and information are met promptly and to customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for producing monthly reports to management and reviewing and updating quarterly compliance reports to PNG CEPA.
  • Support the Superintendent in leading environmental improvement projects.

Qualifications, skills, and experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last three months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Class ‘6’ Driver’s Licence
  • Degree in Science/Engineering (Environmental/Chemistry)
  • At least five years of relevant work experience in the extractive industry (Mining/Oil & Gas)
  • Experience developing and implementing environmental monitoring programs
  • Experience developing and implementing laboratory quality management systems
  • Leadership Experience
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the relevant PNG Environmental Acts and Regulations
  • Proficient and fully conversant in all Microsoft Office Applications
  • Working knowledge of Monitor Pro, SPSS, Power BI, MapInfo/ArcGIS would be an advantage
  • Experience in developing and implementing Environmental Management Systems (ISO14001)
